Probiotic bacteria are living microorganisms that have beneficial effects on human health. They have been extensively studied for their ability to prevent and treat various gastrointestinal diseases and allergies. Although probiotic products are usually consumed by health-conscious people, not much is actually known what kind of effects they have on the immune system in healthy adults.
One particular action they exert is the modulation of immune responses via the gut's mucosal immune system. This study investigated the immunomodulatory effects of probiotics bacteria in healthy adults. Researchers found that probiotics have an anti-inflammatory potential seen as a decrease in serum CRP levels (a marker for inflammation such as in the arteries, joints, and bowel s) and as a reduction in bacteria-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In short, probiotics may benefit the cardiovascular system and many other areas of the body prone to inflammation.
Note: Antiobiotics kill off probiotics, so it may be a good idea to replenish your body’s supply of good bacteria with a probiotic supplement.
